SIGNIFICADO Y EXPLICACIÓN

TO MAKE A VIRTUE OF NECESSITY

to make a virtue of necessity = hacer de la necesidad virtud
tuː meɪk ə ˈvɜːtjuː ɒv nɪˈsɛsɪti

El significado de to make a virtue of necessity (literalmente, "hacer una virutd de la necesidad") es sacar provecho de una situación difícil que no hay mas remedio que afrontar.

Un ejemplo de este idiom en contexto, from The Free Dictionary:

There will be many times in your life where you have to do something you don't want to, so it's best to learn very early how to make a virtue of necessity.

El proverbio to make a virtue of necessity hunde sus raíces en los escritos en latín de San Jerónimo, quién escribió "facis de necessitate virtutem".

Fue el escritor inglés del siglo XIV Geoffrey Chaucer quien lo utilizó por primera vez en inglés en The Knight's Tale.

Este idiom es muy transparente, sólo hay que tener en cuenta al usarlo que la palabra virtud (virtue) va delante, a diferencia del refrán español, en que va detrás (hacer de la necesidad virtud).

Un idiom con significado similar a éste es: to make the best of a bad bargain

The origin of the phrase is unclear. It might have originated in the early 1700s in other forms, but was not very popular. It gained popularity in the mid 1900s, after a stage show called "Out On The Town" was performed in 1944 and a film by the same name came out in 1949. https://www.theidioms.com/out-on-the-town/
